Tyger River Correctional Institution is operated by the South Carolina Department of Corrections. It holds sentenced state prisoners in medium-security male custody. That population and legal authority differ from people awaiting trial or serving short local terms in the Spartanburg County Detention Facility. The Sheriff's roster and county booking report do not document a Tyger River prison discharge merely because the institution is located within Spartanburg County.

A Tyger River status change may be a transfer to Livesay or another SCDC prison, parole, supervised reentry, community supervision, or sentence discharge. Tyger River Supervision Lookup

After an SCDC release, search the SCDPPPS supervision system by the allowed name, SID, county, and birth-year combinations. SCDPPPS supervises probation, parole, and mandatory-release programs. Its public results reflect the previous day. A positive result can corroborate release into supervision, but a negative result is not proof that the person remains incarcerated or that supervision never existed.

Tyger River Institution History

Tyger River is a medium-security institution with an upper yard that opened in 1980 and a lower yard that opened in 1983. Those separate historical components explain why older materials may use the institution or center wording and refer to different parts of the site. They do not create separate public release lists. SCDC controls the state record across both.

The institution's history also underscores why the facility name should not be treated as the committing county. A man serving a sentence at Tyger River may have been committed by any county and may be released to supervision elsewhere. Geography alone cannot do that work.
